I'd prefer some Mixture No. I called everyone (Smokingpipes, Pipes&Cigars), I called random tobacco shops in New York, Chicago, LA, Boston, San Francisco (I live in Santa Clara, CA) – and nobody had the stuff. I am intoxicated by the aroma and flavor of juniper berries, smoky teas and Scottish Single Malt libation which envelope the room. I got a shipment today of several blends new to me. Volumous smoke with a great depth and breath of flavor and aroma. Smoking boyz - light wait champ chords. Cash, money, checks, cash (Ooh, ah). I'm in that four-door by myself.
It's a good smoke with peaty single malts or after earthy food like mushrooms and grouse. I was aghast at the markup on these tobaccos from those who were scalping the stuff at greatly inflated prices. It's mild, not pungent, however it is very musty like old books. There are over 150 reviews here already, so I'll try to avoid retreading ground that's already been well covered by others; although, I will say that the observation that it smells like band-aids in the tin was especially apt. With the waiting lists that some of these retailers have these days, I figured I would save myself a lot of time and trouble by just laying low. I intend to keep a small amount around for that occasion when nothing else fits the mood. As the bowl progresses, it gets richer, toastier and stronger.
Latakia is right behind and tasty. Upon opening the tin and peeling back the oily wax paper, there is a heavenly smell of a clean, rich tobacco. These two also only smoked Bangs and Jess pipes..... But the truth is, some of the blends made today by Esoterica, McClelland, Pease and a couple others are every bit as good as, or better than, anything available back in the day. Burns a little hot on the tongue and multiple bowls wear the mouth out, the effects lingering into the next day. It burns slowly for me and has a nice room note to it. Smoking boyz - light wait champ x. Now it is a very good tobacco - one of the best - but a risky investment unless you intend to consume it all early on. Krumble Cake as the British refer to this tobacco not only has a formidable reputation but upon smoking it has a wonderful unique combination of flavors and aromas. This renowned ingredient also imbues this tobacco with a deep smoky aroma, not so much campfire as other english blends but something much deeper and darker. Gravity filled my Clark's Favorite. If you've ever plowed a field during a light rain, you know exactly what I'm talking about.
I'll skip the details. The Virginias here are nearly hidden and well..... I suspect that the ''Old School'' feel of this tobacco is obtained thru the savant use of chemicals, ( the secret recipe) and this alone disqualifies it from the favored list. Strong and stout, yet smooth and creamy. However, only enjoying it in my first-of-the-day smoke could I enjoy the full taste of this blend, and just because of this fact I couldn't give this blend a 4-star. Great scent upon opening - my tin was fairly damp so I let some flakes dry for about 10 minutes before loading. Penzance is a lot more sublime than that. The bottom two teams break up in an every-chef-for-themselves cook-off in the Redemption Round. And of course I wasn't disappointed. I have been searching for a blend that gave quality and balance, and Penzance meets my criteria. It has a comforting room note that's smokey with Latakia, and with a slight sweetness.
Dunhill make great pipes and Germain makes great tobacco. Anyway, I have likely already said too much as there is a reason this is extremely hard to obtain. I expect I'll be able to live without it.
